I mean, Vinnie is a cool cat, we all know that, but it is not all of his playing, that is "fantastic" and musical- this clip shows a man with chops.

sorry if i look stupid but its hard to tell when people are being sarcastic sometimes and ive read that vinnie has had a history with drugs for a short while
S.P, well let's put it this way, his jaw is really tense and lop sided when he counts the band in - a tale tale sign, he keeps on flicking his head back and twitching and plays really on top of the beat and pushes everything, to the point that it speeds up. Very unlike Vinnie. He also over plays like mad and fills practically every gap. His 4 bar break in the second tune is just nuts and god knows how the band comes in - the antithesis of what big band drumming is all about. The idea is to make the other 15 musicians feel comfortable, not sh1t themselves!
So, no I wasn't joking SP!! [img]wink.gif[/img] Having said that, I still watch his performance open mouthed and laugh at some of the things he pulls off, but I would guess that Vin was totally wired on that one!
Dazz, if you say that that list is the sign of a coked out drummer, then Buddy must have been doing a Tony Montana face plant into a mound of blow before every taping.
I would agree w the Gadd statement here, & I really dug his seg AW [as i do all his perfs], altho I thought all did a great job according to each's style & personality...I also enjoyed DW's Mercy...
You are prob right AFA the VC segment: that one 4-1/4s break where the synchop is def not the norm BB arrangement type [img]wink.gif[/img] - more contempo fusion...he DEF pulled a "Vinnieism" there...oh, well...
Yeah, it's DEF a chops shred-fest from VC, as only he can, esp in the finale trades. He "steps up" the bar on his 2 BB songs AW. But sheist - at least he does it in time [img]tongue.gif[/img] [even if it might be a bit "bright"]! I hear what Dazz is saying, & I agree - but it doesn't make me any less gleeful during his 2 tunes! [img]wink.gif[/img] Hey, it was '89 for Pete's sake, when all the excess in music [can you say "shred guitar"?!] was at it's "max" culmination [b4 it became "politically incorrect" to be a virtuostic player in popular music AND display it!]... ;c) I know, I know, at least be muscial & tasty about it right? ;c) It was, after all, a drum clinic video, tending to focus more on the drummers than the style of BB arrangements [i know this is blasohemy to some ;c)]. But I bet if Vinnie were to do it now, he might be a little more reserved & attentive to the whole tune as an arrangement [again, not that what he did ever "s**ked" on the BRMSC2!]
As Dazz said, it def doesnt "s**k" by any means, just not what is come to be expected as "proper" BB fills & feel, I guess...but I never was an 100% "stick to what is considered the norm" kind of guy anyway...but this doesnt mean to "diss" the "roots" either. You MUST have a good foundation stylistically in order to ever stretch it or "make it your own" - IF it isn't overdone. So he pulled a Vinnie on that one fill. To me, no big deal. ;c) That horn section are such burning players that as such they didn't get lost! :cD [But, it did seem VC "pulled a fast one," didn't it?]...;cP
Vinnie has always been a "spot on," or more like, "on top" of the beat kind of player ever since way back in the mid-to-late 70's...it was/is his personality, esp when he was younger...he was always a "hyper" type personality, regardless of the purported use [which I'm sure didn't help]...he's always had a "high-metabolism" [to coin a much used phrase; & this was b4 Ridlin [img]wink.gif[/img] ...
He has "mellowed" somewhat in these later years, & is at the point now where he doesn't have to prove himself as THE Gun in Town anymore...all the studio work helped do this AW.
Nowadays he tends to be a very warm, sweet man who has matured a great deal from those days...but dont kid yourself, he can lay waste whenever & wherever he chooses...he just chooses more carefully nowadays [img]wink.gif[/img]
I'll go so far as to say that he even "held back" at the CC Lincoln Center & Friehofer's Saratoga '03 summer shows, in order to be less chopsy & more musical...more relaxed...only in the end trades w DW did he even come alive in the truest VC sense, & then still not even to his potential level of the BRMSC2. [img]wink.gif[/img]
Vinnie Colaiuta has earned all the respect from other musos worldwide [not just us drummers! ;cP], AWA works as much as he wants. He has nothing to "prove" to anyone anymore [long since done]...& "all the time in the world" nowadays to get hired to just "make some music"...[& knock the other 99.99% of us drummers on our patooties ENAT!!] :cp...[Did I just say "patooties?!" OK, howzabout "duffs"...or keisters...]

There is no question, especially the way he throws the mic around in his hand at the end of his playing segment whilst he addresses the audience. (Although Vinnie's response to the gag about his tux has me laughing every time).
Fuse, you too are right, especially about Gadd. I take a leaf out of his book in counting tunes. Everytime I'm on a stage and people are warming up etc, I'm quietly clicking my sticks to the tempo the WHOLE TIME, so it sits in people's subconcious...
Regards this performance at the BBRSC, we all know perhaps more than others (we are all Vinnie nuts after all) what Vinnie is capable of, and whilst the chops were there, the music wasn't at the formost of his mind. Is there a better advert for the downside of drugs in music?

Well, I'm guessing some of Porcaro's greatest tracks were cut while he was high.
And that video with the burping, I think he's pretty wired.
The thing about that drug is that you think you are so great, but in reality, there's just notihng going on. A testament to VIn's and Jeff's talent.
Plus, they didn't have Starbucks back then.
